Solid State Storage Initiative

SSS Performance Test Suite Specification
The most important activity now underway is the development of the SSS Performance Test Suite (PTS) specification.
Many manufacturers currently utilize different measurement methodologies to derive the performance specifications for their SSS products. As a result, it has not been possible for purchasers of SSS to fairly compare the performance specifications of SSS products from different manufacturers. This situation is a result of having no industry standard test methodology for measuring SSS performance. The SSS Technical Work Group (TWG) is developing the SSS PTS specification to address the need for a standard test methodology by specifying tests for SSS products.
The SSS TWG is currently winding up its work on the first version of the SSS PTS, with a target release for Public Technical Review in July, when it will be made available to the general public for evaluation and feedback. The comments and data collected from this review will be analyzed by the SSS TWG and used to improve the final version of the specification. It’s not too late to get involved – join the SSS TWG!
Storage Pairing
The SSSI is investigating a technology that we’re calling Storage Pairing. The concept involves low cost / low capacity Solid State Storage installed in a PC alongside a higher capacity HDD. The SSS acts as a boot-up drive and a fast-access cache for frequently used files. The HDD provides bulk storage for less frequently accessed data. Storage Pairing combines the speed advantage of SSS with the cost and storage advantages of HDD. The SSS can take the form of a SATA SSD, Flash on a PCIe card, or other implementations. The secret sauce in Storage Pairing is the file management software utilized to ensure that the right data is stored on the SSS to maximize performance. A white paper on Storage Pairing is currently in development. Interested parties should join the SSSI Technical Development sub-committee.

What is the Solid State Storage Initiative?
The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) announced the formation of the Solid State Storage Initiative (SSSI), which will serve to foster the growth and success of the market for solid state storage in both commercial and consumer environments.
As a collective Initiative of industry leaders committed to becoming the recognized authority for storage made from non-volatile, solid state memory devices, the SSSI will coordinate and conduct education efforts for the vendor and user communities, perform market outreach highlighting the virtues of solid state storage and further the development of standards specific to the technology.
The SSSI is responsible for coordinating and managing all activities within the SNIA related to solid state storage, including those for education, technical development, business development, marketing and implementation. In addition, the SSSI will collaborate with other organizations and initiatives to further the dialogue on solid state storage as well as leverage the SNIA International organization to promote solid state storage on a global scale.

TCO Calculator
The SSSI has created a Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Calculator that analyzes enterprise solid state storage ownership costs by application. The SSD TCO model calculates the total cost of ownership for hard disk and solid state drives. Users simply enter comparison data for a given application (data such as I/O transfer size, percentage random read/write and current HDD RPM) and the model provides the TCO. The model enables TCO analysis on power usage, drive enclosures, drive acquisition, support and maintenance costs.
Also available is a white paper, Total Cost of Solid State Storage Ownership: An In-Depth Analysis of Many Important TCO Factors that reviews the aspects of TCO that should be considered when choosing a storage solution. To download the calculator and white paper, go to
