• How DCB makes iSCSI better

  A challenge with traditional iSCSI deployments is the non-deterministic nature of Ethernet networks. When Ethernet networks only carried non-storage traffic, lost data packets where not a big issue as they would get retransmitted.

  However; as we layered storage traffic over Ethernet, lost data packets became a “no no” as storage traffic is not as forgiving as non-storage traffic and data retransmissions introduced I/O delays, which are unacceptable to storage traffic. In addition, traditional Ethernet also had no mechanism to assign priorities to classes of I/O. Therefore a new solution was needed. Short of creating a separate Ethernet network to handle iSCSI storage traffic, Data Center Bridging (DCB), was that solution.

  BYOD. If that acronym doesn’t strike fear into the heart of every chief exec or finance director, it should. Short for “Bring Your Own Device”, there’s been a proliferation of new technology that’s take the business world by storm; the tablet. More portable than a laptop, more connected than a mobile phone, these cross-over devices are incredibly popular, and rightly so. The flexibility they provide is truly amazing. Give a presentation, take photographs, jot down notes on the move, browse the internet, use business email and make calls, all from one easily transported device.

Opinions were offered by a variety of vendors including Quantum, Spectra Logic, Oracle, SNIA and end user Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research, each making recommendations as to what the future of data protection looked like. While each presentation had its own unique suggestions one resounding theme was apparent. Tape, yes TAPE will be a part of the next generation data protection strategy.
