Data Protection & Capacity Optimization Committee
The Data Protection and Capacity Optimization (DPCO) Committee's mission is to foster the growth and success of the market for Data Protection and Capacity Optimization technologies.
The goals of the DPCO Committee are:
Educate the vendor and user communities about data protection and efficient data storage technologies, which includes:
- Coordinating education activities with the Education Committee
- Developing SNIA certifications related to data protection and capacity optimization
- Creating peer reviewed vendor–neutral SNIA Tutorials
- Supporting vendor-neutral hands–on–labs at SNW
- Leveraging SNW and other SNIA and partner conferences
Perform market outreach that highlights the benefits of relevant technologies and document implementation considerations and best practices. This includes:
- Writing articles in trade magazines, press releases and white papers
- Producing the Buyer’s Guide
- Creating web–based information using the SNIA website
Advocate and support technical work associated with data protection and capacity optimization, which includes:
- Determining what technical work should be performed within SNIA TWGs to accelerate the acceptance of data protection and capacity optimization
- Working with the Technical Council to define terminology and create any additional TWGs as needed
- Working to liaison and collaborate with other SNIA and external organizations
SNIA Members interested in participating in related activites are encouraged to join the DPCO Committee. There are no fees beyond the SNIA membership fees.
Founding members of the DPCO Committee include active participants of the DMF Data Protection Initiative and Data Deduplication and Space Reduction Special Interest Group.
Further information about the DPCO Committee is available to SNIA Members at:

- Understanding Data Deduplication Ratios
July 2008
This paper explores the significance of deduplication ratios related to specific capacity optimization techniques, within the context of information lifecycle management. Each of these techniques has a valuable role to play in improving data storage efficiency.
- CDP: Solving the Problem of Recovery
July 2008
This document reviews traditional methods of data protection and availability, and offers insights into an alternative data protection solution - Continuous Data Protection (CDP). Often touted for its ability to provide instant restoration and granular recovery, CDP also solves the backup window challenge by eliminating the backup window itself, enabling the creation of backup copies anytime, day or night, without affecting online operations.
- 100 Year Archive Requirements Study Report
June 2007
This ground breaking study identifies requirements from the practitioner’s point of view and confirms that this pending crisis must be addressed by developing standards and best practices consistent with the operating practice we call Information Lifecycle Management (ILM).
