Welcome to the Ethernet Storage Europe home page! What is IPSI?The SNIA Europe IP Storage Initiative (IPSI) is the sister organization of the IP Storage Forum (IPSF) and focused on driving the broad adoption of IP-based SAN storage solutions in Europe through evangelism, education and promotion. The SNIA Europe IPSI committee works closely with the IP Storage Forum to deliver its message around the world. |
IP Storage has rapidly become a mainstream storage networking technology, offering secure, reliable and flexible new options to customers. IP Storage solutions can complement and extend existing SAN environments, or provide affordable new SAN storage solutions in parts of the IT infrastructure still dominated by direct-attached storage. IP Storage solutions allow organizations to maximize existing IT investments while deploying more effective and efficient data management solutions.
In the past 5 years we have seen the rapid growth IP Storage, particularly in Windows. iSCSI is now viewed as a mainstream SAN solution for business-critical Windows server environments in medium and in large organizations. In addition, the recent rapid growth of IP Storage solutions for virtual server and blade server environments has made IP Storage the fastest growing segment of the storage market. That growth is expected to continue in the coming years as 10 GigaBit Ethernet drives the technology into large-scale, high-performance, and tier 1 data center environments.
iSCSI is particularly interesting for storage consolidation supporting application servers in environments where simplicity, flexibility, and price/performance are the critical IT decision factors, as well as for more affordable and efficient backup and disaster recovery solutions for distributed data centers. Most iSCSI deployments have occurred at the departmental or regional level of very large enterprises, or in the main data center of medium and small enterprises. Most are “green field” SANs replacing direct-attached storage, particularly in Windows and Linux environments in which limited admin support, host attach costs, and infrastructure complexity have traditionally inhibited Fibre Channel SAN deployment. More recently, iSCSI has also become a popular solution in virtual server environments, blade server environments, and remote offices providing “lights-out” data management and protection.
Analysts forecast that the relative market share of Ethernet based networked storage could account for $7 Billion in 2009, compared with $11 Billion for Fibre Channel SAN storage. In fact a surprising number of enterprises today have “Ethernet only data centers” with all storage traffic using an Ethernet infrastructure for SAN, NAS, and remote datacenter connectivity. This phenomenon is likely to become increasingly widespread in the coming years as 10 GbE is more aggressively deployed.
